Salmon Facts

Several different types of salmon are produced in the Americas.

Pacific Salmon

There are five different species of Pacific salmon: Chinook, Chum, Coho, Pink and Sockeye. Salmon farms generally stock Chinook and Coho. Pacific species account for all of the wild salmon caught in North America.

Atlantic Salmon

Atlantic salmon account for over 95 percent of the ocean-farmed salmon produced, with most of them raised in ocean-farms on the Pacific coast of Canada and Chile. Atlantic salmon have high farm survival rates, which can be contributed to the efficient way they convert food to body weight, and their ability to adapt to farming techniques.

Commercial fisheries for wild Atlantic salmon are very small and have been dramatically reduced in recent years due to concerns about wild population levels.

Benefits of Ocean-Farmed Salmon:

The Healthy Choice

Salmon farming gives consumers the opportunity to pay lower prices for salmon. Currently, wild salmon costs much more than ocean-farmed salmon costs. And since wild salmon is seasonal, ocean farming allows consumers to enjoy salmon year-round.

Safe

Food safety is an important aspect of why ocean-farmed salmon is so beneficial. Salmon is one of the safest fish for consumption on the market, combining great nutrition and taste with a high degree of food safety. Various food inspection agencies in the United States (the FDA), Canada (the CFIA) and Chile (Sernapesca) continuously monitor salmon production to ensure that the highest quality, safest food reaches consumers. Ocean-farmed salmon is also fully traceable from the moment it was processed until it reaches the table. For more information, see Food Safety

Eco-Friendly

Salmon farming is a safe and eco-friendly answer to the worldwide demand for fresh salmon year-round. The industry goes to great lengths to protect the environment and natural sea life from any farming impacts. For more information, see Ocean Farming
